The opening shots of the overseas military base at sunset set a deceptively peaceful tone before chaos erupts. Watching the soldiers scramble as enemy jets strafe the runway in Black Hawk Rises had my heart racing. The visual contrast between the golden hour light and the fiery explosions is absolutely stunning cinematography.
James Wayne riding that motorcycle through the burning wreckage while taking out jets is pure cinema gold. The scene where he jumps the bike over debris with the sun setting behind him is iconic. You can tell this guy is built different, handling that heavy machine gun like it's a toy while everyone else is panicking.
Adam Miller's performance as the commander watching his base get pulverized is intense. The sweat on his face and the sheer panic in his voice when he orders all birds into the air adds so much tension. It feels real when he realizes they are completely outmatched by the surprise attack.
Two weeks later and we are in the barracks hearing rumors about the legend. The transition from high-octane war zone to soldiers gossiping about James Wayne is a great pacing choice. Then seeing Davis bully the new guy only for James to step up creates such satisfying tension.
I know it sounds crazy but watching James shoot down fighter jets with a ground-based machine gun in Black Hawk Rises was surprisingly believable because of the editing. The slow-motion bullet shots and the cockpit reactions sell the impossible feat. It is that superhero energy the other soldiers were talking about.
Davis walking in with that laundry basket acting all tough is asking for trouble. You can see James Wayne sizing him up while scrubbing the floor. The way Davis demands his uniform be gleaming for the parade shows he has no idea who he is messing with. That glare at the end says it all.
The pyrotechnics team deserves an award for this episode. From the control room getting hit to the fuel tanks blowing up, every explosion feels massive. The scene where the control tower takes a direct hit and the screens go static had me on the edge of my seat. Pure adrenaline from start to finish.
Listening to the soldiers in the bunk room describe James as a literal human beast adds so much lore. It builds up the mystery before we even see him in action again. Wondering what his secret really is keeps you hooked. The hype is real and the payoff with his entrance is perfect.
That jump over the destroyed aircraft wing is going to be replayed forever. James Wayne balancing on the bike mid-air while firing back is insane. The silhouette against the giant orange sun is a poster-worthy moment. This is why I love watching on the netshort app, the quality is insane.
Seeing the guy who just saved everyone getting bullied by a jerk like Davis is frustrating but sets up a great comeback. James kneeling to clean the floor shows discipline but that look in his eyes promises revenge. Can not wait to see Davis get what is coming to him in the next episode.
